Back Up Line 5mm
Back Up Line 5 mm – The essential cord for multi-pitch climbing
The Back Up Line 5 mm has become a reference for multi-pitch climbers who want the comfort of a single rope without giving up the ability to make long rappels.
Made from aramid and polyamide, this ultra-static cord offers an excellent balance of light weight, abrasion resistance and handling. Its small size makes it easy to carry at the bottom of your pack, where it's quickly forgotten… until the moment it becomes essential.
Besides rappelling, it's also ideal for hauling a bag, setting up a gear haul line, or performing various technical maneuvers on multi-pitch routes.
Why use a Back Up Line?
More and more climbers today choose a single rope for multi-pitch routes. There are many advantages:
belaying the leader with a Birdie or another cam-assisted belay device;
belaying the second with a Spoc or a progress-capture device;
less weight and bulk than a double-rope system;
faster belay transitions with much less rope to handle.
On the other hand, a 50 or 60-meter single rope usually doesn't allow for the longest rappels.
This is exactly where the Back Up Line comes into its own. Very light and extremely compact, it lets you extend your rappels without carrying a second dynamic rope, while remaining available for hauling a bag or setting up a gear haul line when the climb demands it.
Warning: due to its ultra-static construction, the Back Up Line absorbs practically no energy. It is intended for rappelling and hauling maneuvers, and must never be used as a climbing rope or for dynamic belaying.
