Here is the new edition of the historic guide "Valtellina, Valchiavenna ed Engadina": given the enormous amount of material, we felt the need to split it into two separate parts, an operation made easier by the clear geographical distinction between the areas covered. This volume is thus born, following, two years later, the one devoted to Valchiavenna, already a best-seller. Guido Lisignoli, after four editions, passed the baton to two young authors: Simone Manzi for the book published in 2018, and Camilla Cerretti for this new volume. The Adda river, which runs through the whole of Valtellina, separates two very different mountain massifs: the western Rhaetian Alps and the Orobie Alps. Thanks to this orographic richness and the length of the valley, different rock types are found just a few kilometres apart: the granite of Val Masino, the limestone of the Upper Valley, the gneiss and schist of the Lower and Middle Valley, the serpentine of Val Malenco, the verrucano of Val Gerola. This is a territory rich in rock still to be discovered: alongside internationally famous structures such as Sasso Remenno or Zoia in Val Malenco, there are countless little-known or never-before-considered walls, where new lines are constantly being born. Many local climbers add value to the territory by keeping the crags safe and developing new sectors, and among them the most active is certainly Simone Pedeferri. It is, finally, a valley offering a wide choice of different places and routes, to be chosen according to the weather, technical difficulty, mental commitment, desire to walk, and type of climbing. The guide thus becomes, for our holidays, a bit like a cookbook, where one chooses a dish according to the ingredients one wishes to use, to guarantee an experience in tune with our needs.
